Salary conversations are decided before you ever meet, in the impression your CV leaves. A document that lists duties invites a market-rate offer, because duties are interchangeable. A document that shows the money you made, saved, or protected invites a negotiation, because value is not. If you want the higher number, your CV has to argue for it in evidence a hiring manager can defend to their own boss.
Show impact in the currency the business cares about
Reframe every major bullet from what you did to what it was worth. Revenue, cost, risk, and time are the levers that map to budget, so lead with those. “Managed the vendor relationships” says little. “Renegotiated three supplier contracts, cutting annual spend by 180,000” tells the reader you pay for yourself.
- Revenue: deals closed, accounts grown, pipeline built, in real figures.
- Cost: spend cut, waste removed, hours automated away.
- Scope: budgets owned, team size led, systems you were accountable for.
- Risk: incidents prevented, audits passed, compliance gaps closed.
Signal the level you are aiming for
A CV pitched at your target salary reads a rung above your current one without overclaiming. Show ownership and judgment, not just execution. Lines that begin with “led,” “owned,” or “decided” position you as someone who set direction, which is what a senior band pays for. Trim the junior housekeeping tasks that anchor you to a lower tier.
Make the top third carry the case
Recruiters skim, and the top of page one sets the anchor. Put your strongest, best-quantified achievements there, and open with a short summary that states your value in one honest line rather than a list of adjectives. If the best evidence is buried on page two, the salary anchor is set before anyone reaches it.
