A board CV is read by a nominations committee asking a narrow question: can this person govern, not manage? That shift changes everything about how you present a long executive career. The document must foreground oversight, stewardship, and judgement, and quietly demote the operational detail that got you there.
Lead with a governance profile
Open with a short profile that states your board proposition in board language: the sectors you can oversee, the committees you can serve, and the perspective you bring to a board table. A committee reading twenty CVs wants your value visible in the first few lines. Follow it with any current non-executive or trustee positions, since directorships are the most relevant experience you can show.
Reframe experience as stewardship
Your executive roles matter for the scale and accountability they demonstrate, not the daily operations. Rewrite them accordingly.
- Scale of responsibility: the size of the organisation, budget, and headcount you were accountable for.
- Governance exposure: reporting to a board, chairing a committee, or leading through audit, risk, or remuneration matters.
- Stewardship outcomes: turnarounds, successful transactions, regulatory navigation, or long-term value created.
- Committee-relevant expertise: financial literacy, risk, ESG, or sector knowledge a board needs at the table.
Strip the operational verbs. A board reader cares that you were accountable for a result, not that you personally executed each step.
Keep it dense but disciplined
Senior candidates earn two pages, occasionally three where the directorship list is long, but no committee rewards padding. State current and past board roles, professional qualifications, and any relevant public or charitable service. Restraint in the layout signals the same judgement you are claiming to offer, so use a conservative format and let the substance carry it.
Close with the evidence of standing: fellowships, notable appointments, or governance training such as a company-direction qualification, listed plainly.
